The timing chain on a Ford 4.6 is not the kind of job you hand off to someone who hasn't done it before. This engine uses a multi-stage chain system - primary and secondary chains, multiple sprockets, tensioners, and guides - all working together to keep your valve timing exactly where it needs to be. When any part of that system starts to wear, the whole engine pays the price.

Here's what was going on with this one: worn-out chains, shot tensioners, and timing components that were well past their service life. The old guides had seen better days too. This is exactly the kind of wear that causes that rattling noise on startup - or worse, causes the engine to run rough and throw codes that don't seem to make sense at first glance.

To get to all of it, we pulled the valve covers, front cover, and worked through the full timing system on both banks. A job like this means tracking every component, every sprocket position, and every tensioner carefully. One thing out of place and the engine is out of time - and that's a much bigger problem than where you started.

With fresh chains, new tensioners, and new guides installed, this 4.6 is set up to run reliably again. That's what good engine repair looks like - not just swapping the obvious part, but making sure everything tied to it gets the attention it needs at the same time.

If your Ford has been rattling at startup, running rough, or the check engine light has been on for a while, it's worth having someone who knows these engines take a look. Issues like this don't fix themselves - and catching it before a chain jumps time saves a lot of money down the road.
